Meet The Team
Steven Bell, Owner
Prior to buying Chapters Hotel in March 2005, Steven and his father, Les Bell, owned the North East convenience chain Bells Stores. Steven is a widely experienced retailer having worked from the shop floor to the controlling role within one of the country’s biggest independent convenience retail businesses, which they subsequently sold to Sainsburys Plc in 2004.
He was the youngest National Chairman of the Association of Convenience Stores (1990 – 2000).
As well as Chapters Hotel, he operates a shopfitting business called Newman Scott, which has been running for 21 years with brands such as Austin Reed, Chelsea Football Club, Hugo Boss and Rockcliffe Hall Golf Club to name a few. Click here to view website
Steven also owns a designer clothing company, The House, with his brother Peter. They have two stores; one in Yarm and one in Harrogate.
Victor & Victoria at Chapter’s Hotel and Restaurant…
Chapter’s Hotel & Restaurant, during September 2011, saw the return of one of their most popular couples. Victor & Victoria Vassallo originally worked at Chapters from March 2005 for four and -a-half years, before deciding to have a change & move to Harrogate.
The couple were originally persuaded to move from Malta by Steven Bell, the current owner of Chapters. After sampling the food and ambience of Victor’s Malta establishment, which had been voted one of the best restaurants in Malta by British Airways Flight magazine, Steven realised this Maltese restaurateur and his talented wife (who trained in Malta under two Michelin-star chefs) were the ideal team to revitalise Chapters.
Victor is the General Manager and Victoria is the Head Chef. They have been married for over 29 years and will be joining their daughter, Catya, who has worked at Chapters for over six years as Front of House along with her sous chef Husband, Ian – a real family affair.
“We are enjoying meeting many of our original clients, says Victoria, “but we also look forward to meeting and befriending many more new ones and introducing new and exciting menus.”
Victor Vassallo, General Manager
Victor brings to the company the passion, ensuring smoothness of service throughout the hotel & restaurant. Victor’s knowledge of the industry enables him to keep all his staff on their toes, ensuring that all guests visiting are treated like V.I.P.s. Victor is the main point of Contact for all Functions. His role is to ensure that the guests have a superb day without any stress!
Victoria Vassallo, Head Chef
She trained under two Michelin starred chefs and was voted Malta’s best chef in a British Airways poll. Victoria is involved in all aspects of the Restaurant in order to ensure the smooth running of Chapters, and keeps her finger firmly on the pulse for innovative recipes.
Tonio Camilleri, Hotel & Accounts Manager
Tonio organises and maintains the accounts for the hotel. His knowledge of business spans decades, with him owning his own store in his home country in Malta. Tonio enjoys the finer things in life especially Wine – his love of Wine shone through when he undertook the WSET Wine Course, achieving a merit! Tonio also holds a Personal Licence for the Hotel and has had Fire Warden Training.
Rachel Power, Marketing & Events, HR & PA Support & Reception Manager
Rachel has worked for Steven for over 16 years, moving over from Bells Stores to Chapters Hotel. Rachel’s eye for detail and efficient time management for events ensures all the Marketing & Functions are word perfect. Rachel’s education is to degree level and she has also undertaken a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Management at IGD.
Rachel & Victor are the main points of Contact for all Functions. Their role is to ensure that the guests have a superb day without any stress!Rachel works along Victor ensuring that all the functions are organised. She also looks after the Reception and Chambermaids making sure the staffing needs are sorted and the hotel is always looking it’s best!
Diane Busuttil, reception
Diane has worked for Chapters since Steven & Dawn took over in 2005. Her friendly & experienced nature puts guests at rest when making reservations for the hotel or restaurant. All receptionists undertake Computer training and NVQ level 1 & Level 2 in Customer Service. Diane, just like the rest of the Chapters team has also had Fire Warden Training
