Team Fietsen Tempo, named after the Belgian bike shop owned by ex 7-11 pro bike rider Peter Stevenson, originally from Hambleton RC ,Northallerton and a close friend and team mate of co-founder John Murray.
Mike Milen from Teesside lived and raced for over 10 years in Belgium where he would meet and ride with Peter Stevenson .Mike returned back to the North East in 2003 forming the team after much prompting from John.
Returning to cycling after a career cut short by injury, Johns passion and enthusiasm for the sport was infectious and he soon gathered a group of ex racers who had competed against each other through the 70’s & 80’s and built a team based on a European attitude to competition, teamwork and tactics.
The team was originally built around Veterans Mike Milen, Stuart Morris, Kevin Byers, Noel Clough, Mike Bell & Martin Hopkinson with youngsters Will Brown and Alex Bottomley developing under the support of the more experienced team mates.
Solid teamwork saw Kevin Byers Secure the National Masters Road ChampionShip in 2006 and Sid Barras the National over 60 Road Race Championship. John secured medals in LVRC championship with Martin Hopkinson collecting LVRC silver. During the winter months, Noel took the National Cyclo Cross title and numerous top placings in National Trophy events. Consecutive overall classification wins in the Croft series for Kevin followed as a result of that dependable teamwork, no mean feat for a team of vets in season long open competition!
